The Amathole Museum
The Amathole Museum, which has an international reputation, originated from the King William's Town Naturalist Society founded in 1884. The name of the Museum has changed twice, and in 1999 officially to Amathole. The isiXhosa term amathole (calves), is the name of the nearby mountains
The museum shop is named after our most famous exhibit, the wandering hippo. In our shop you will find articles from local crafters for sale. These articles each carry a tag with the crafters name and locality.
If you are planning to visit us as a group tea, filter coffee and scrumptious biscuits served in the museum's tea room can be arranged for you. Please contact us at least one day in advance.
